What a Psychiatric Evaluation Involves

Your first visit is a conversation, not a test

A psychiatric evaluation is the first visit for every new patient at Living Hope. It is a conversation, not a test you can fail. Here is what happens, how to prepare, and what comes next.

What the first visit is for

The goal is to understand you: what brought you here, what you have tried, how you are sleeping and functioning day to day, and what you want to be different. You meet with Ottilia Sibanda, a dual-certified Family and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, over secure video.

What we will talk about

  • What is going on now, and how long it has been going on.
  • Your health history, including any medications you take.
  • Past mental health care, if any, and what helped or did not.
  • Sleep, appetite, energy, work or school, and relationships.
  • Family history, where it is relevant, and your goals for care.

You can share as much or as little as you are comfortable with. Nothing you say is judged.

How to prepare

A quiet, private spot

Find a place with a steady internet connection where you will not be overheard.

Your medications

Have a list of your current medications and doses nearby.

Your top concerns

Jot down the two or three things you most want to cover.

Any records

If you have records from a previous provider, have them handy. They help but are not required.

What happens after

At the end of the visit, you and Ottilia talk through a plan. That may include follow-up visits, therapy, medication, or a combination. Our approach is talk first. Medication is one option, used thoughtfully when it is the right fit for you. Any plan is yours to ask questions about and to change as you go.

We see adults and adolescents, anywhere in Arizona. Patients under 18 need a parent or guardian’s consent to begin care, and a parent or guardian usually joins the first visit.

Take the first step
